are words from students perspective, Nina and Seungji are taking an ESL class down at the Learning Center. Nina will take her IELTS test later in month, a test administrated by the British, an exam to judge English language ability.

TESOL or TESL or TEFL are teacher certificates for ESL courses. These are words from the teacher’s perspective. They are largely equivalent, someone stated TESOL is TESL+TEFL, not sure if that is true.

Teach English as a Foreign Language (teacher travelling)

I am a USA resident and TESOL teacher, though British, Canadian and Australian residents can be considered living in English native language locations without getting into the whole Quebec, Canada preferring French. As a teacher in Indonesia, the teacher would be teaching English as a foreign language to local students. TEFL.

Places to teach online, where you are paid, could be preply, amazingtalker, italki, verbling and cambly.

English as a volunteer at a City learning center

A student preparing for a student’s IELTS test would no doubt feel a little better if the teacher was TESOL certified. This is one type of student. This is not required or in high demand to be a volunteer tutor.

The need or demand for English Tutors is more typically an adult learner not fully understanding of English, working on their speaking skills.

The demand for conversation and pronunciation is 90% high, the need for testing, certificates is much lower for volunteers at City learning centers.

As a tutor, try a lesson on many ways O in pronounced like long U, short U, or short A and sometimes like an O, a long O.

  • Onion əny(ə)n is O pronounced with U in under.
  • Option äpSH(ə)n is O pronounced like A in apple.
  • Oh my is O pronounced like O in vote vōt.

Mostly though, it is practice/practice/practice, the student is looking for conversation and error correcting, not too many prepared lessons from their tutors, 40 minutes of Student Speaking Time per hour.

Two very places near Boston is you can tutor for free at Watertownlib Watertown Public Library. They also give you two hours free teacher training to get you going.

There are opportunity to tutor in northern Cambridge, closer to Harvard than MIT. Instead of tutoring specific students, you could be a Teacher Assistant. The classroom free classes are weekdays.

Also, C learning center is on Rindge Avenue, a walk from Alewife.
